144Bay of Islands, two ways to see it

Practicalities

Getting there

The Bay of Islands sits far enough from Auckland that "day trip" is technically possible but rarely a good idea — the real numbers explain why.

Driving from Auckland

It's roughly 227 km / 140 miles north of Auckland to Paihia, a 3-4 hour drive depending on stops and traffic through Whangārei. It's a legitimate self-drive route with plenty of places to break the trip, but treat it as a genuine travel day each direction, not a quick hop.

Flying to Kerikeri

Kerikeri Airport, about 23 km / 20 minutes' drive from Paihia, runs several flights a day from Auckland at around 40 minutes in the air — the fastest option if your schedule is tight, and often worth it to free up an extra day at the bay itself.

Getting around once you're there

Paihia is the practical base and departure point for nearly everything. The passenger ferry to Russell takes about fifteen minutes and runs frequently — no car needed for a Russell day trip. A separate vehicle ferry connects Opua to Russell if you're driving and want your car on that side of the bay.

Don't assume you can do Auckland → Bay of Islands → Auckland in one day. See why the day-trip math rarely works before booking one.
