Best time to visit

New Zealand's summer (December–February) is peak season here, and for the water track specifically, the warm sea makes a real difference.

Summer (Dec–Feb): warm water, full crowds

This is when the water track makes the most sense — sea temperatures of 18-25°C make swimming and dolphin encounters genuinely comfortable, not just technically possible. It's also New Zealand's own peak domestic holiday season, so expect busier cruises, fuller accommodation, and higher prices.

Waitangi Day, 6 February

The anniversary of the 1840 signing draws large crowds and full ceremonial events to the Treaty Grounds — a completely different, much busier visit than any other day, worth planning around rather than stumbling into by accident.

Summer's calmer seas suit both swimming and the Hole in the Rock passage.

The shoulder and winter trade-off

Outside summer, the land track — Waitangi, Russell — is barely affected by season and gets noticeably quieter, which can make for a better museum and walking experience. The water track still runs (cruises operate year-round), but cooler, choppier winter conditions make swim stops and the Hole in the Rock passage less reliable, and some smaller operators reduce their schedules.

If the water track is your priority, lean toward summer. If it's the history, any season works, and shoulder months trade a little weather risk for real crowds.
