About
Why the water/land split
Most Bay of Islands guides list attractions in no particular order — a cruise here, a museum there. We kept noticing that everything genuinely sorts into one of two tracks: things you do on a boat, and things you do on land tied to the region's history. So the whole site is built around that split.
What this site is
144 is an independent planning guide — named for the real number of islands scattered across the bay. It isn't a booking platform, a tour operator, or affiliated with the Waitangi National Trust, the Department of Conservation, or any cruise company mentioned here.
How facts get checked
Historical dates and figures are checked against public sources — Te Ara, NZHistory, the Waitangi Tribunal, and primary heritage listings — before being written up. Practical details like ferry times, flight durations and cruise lengths change more often, so treat those as a planning starting point and confirm with the operator directly before booking.
